Evaluation Question 4-Draft

Target Audience:

My target audience is mainly females aged 16-24, who have a key interest in the indie and mainly indie pop genre. Due to being more interested in indie pop than completely indie my target audience will follow some mainstream trends however will also lean towards more unique fashion, style and music taste to create their own mix. This can involve mixing well known brands like Nike and Adidas with statement items from more individual and niche shops. My target audience will be steady gigs and festivals goers and will always have music as the backbone of their life, from listening to range of radio stations to always having headphones with them. Their playlists will be different from person to person, which fits in into the indie genre, however there will some clear definite artists including The 1975, The Bleachers, New Politics, Walk The Moon and The Mowgli’s. Throughout creating my magazine, I have tried and aimed towards features that would appeal and satisfy this target audience and the indie pop genre.

I chose the audience demographic of 16-24 year olds as me and my peers (who I used for target audience research and advice) fit into this age range enabling me to understand and appreciate styles, designs and trends that may work. This age range, in particularly the higher end, is also the ages where people are more likely to perhaps stop following the mainstream pop music and develop into different and new music tastes; my magazine works for this as an indie pop magazine helping to explore the genre without completely immersing and overwhelming readers. I have aimed my magazine at mainly females as the styling, design and colour scheme of the magazine definitely leans more towards females; however, males may also be interested in my magazine as I have used professional block fonts and the use of the green colour to not completely disinterest male readers from my magazine.
As shown in my research I have created audience profiles for both males and females; my magazine is mainly aimed at females so the female audience profile is very important however I also created a male profile as I wanted to bear them in mind while making my magazine so I didn’t rule out a big audience demographic. To develop on from this research, I have asked my audience profiles questions regarding my magazine design and the general needs and wants from them.

Q1. How much would you be willing to pay for an indie pop music magazine?

Q2. What music artists would you like to see feature in an indie pop magazine?

Q3. What general styling/ design would you like the magazine to have?

Female Profile-Iris Answers

Q1: I would be happy to pay between a range of £2.50 to £3.70 for an indie/indie pop magazine if I felt the magazine was a high quality and fitted my customer needs. I would be reluctant to pay any more for a magazine as I feel for a regularly produced product this would be too much and unrealistic on a student income, which is my current situation.

Q2. I would like to see a range of artists feature within the magazine, as in an indie pop magazine I would want to see both more indie music artists and more indie pop music artists from this genre. Some definite artists to feature would be The 1975, Bastille and James Bay. I would also enjoy seeing new artists as by reading the magazine I would be able to find out more information about the band/artists as well as being able to read about the artists I already follow.

Q3. I would like the magazine to look sleek and professional, something that would look appealing and eye catching however would also fit on the shelves as a genuine looking magazine. I would not want a hectic busy layout as I feel this would look immature and not targeted towards my age range. A monochrome theme with a pop of colour would attract me to the magazine however I am not fussed what colour the pop of colour would be (it doesn’t have to be stereotypically feminine) as long as it looks effective.

Male Profile- Jack Answers

Q1. I would happily pay between £2.00-£3.50 for an indie pop magazine as this is around the price I pay for other magazines of the same genre, such as DIY Magazine which is £3.00. I have picked a slightly lower price range as this would be more effective and realistic for me as a student. If after reading the magazine I began to repeat purchase the magazine as I enjoyed the magazine, I would be more prepared to pay more for the magazine.

Q2. For an indie pop magazine, I would really like to see The Kooks, Alt J, The Bleachers, Bastille and The 1975 as well as a range of artists. I would like the magazine to have a keen focus on new talent, but not to neglect already existing bands as these articles are also interesting to read. Ideally the magazine would not just be based on artists but other key features in the indie pop genre such as reviews and what to look out for.

Q3. I would like the magazine to look well produced and nicely finished, as this would attract me more to the magazine. Ideally the magazine would be a monochrome scheme with some colour, which would preferably be shades of blue or green, however I would not be totally be put off the magazine if more stereotypically feminine magazine colours were used. Overall I would like the magazine to look fit for my age range, something that I could happily read in public.
